The Embassy of Belgium in Kigali has the pleasure to invite you to the screening of the documentary “Métis, Belgium’s Stolen Children” at the Centre Culturel Francophone de Kigali on Thursday, 16th November 2023. The documentary was awarded the Prix Europa 2022 in the category “Cultural Diversity”. It is Belgium’s contribution to this year’s European Film Festival in Kigali.
Synopsis
“Métis, Belgium’s Stolen Children” is a documentary miniseries in 3 parts about the unknown and unsettling history of hundreds of métis children from the Belgian colonial period. As children of a white father and a black mother, they were considered illegitimate, taken away from their mothers, and placed in boarding schools in Save and Byimana, Rwanda. Just before independence, they were transferred to Belgium in a hurry. In 2018, the Belgian Parliament voted a “resolution métis” to promote historical research on the topic and make the official records accessible to métis children who want to retrace their origins.
On 16 November 2023, we will be screening the third episode “Paul” in the presence of : Paul (the protagonist), his mother, Ken Kamanayo (the inspirer, cinematographer, and co-director of the series), Dr.Liberata Gahongayire(Rwandan historian), and Antoinette Uwonkunda (President of the Asbl Métis du Monde). The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on the history of the colonial métis children and their search for their lost parents.
